Poem #99
English Translation
Persian
My heart, in the fancy of Farrukh's face, is as distracted
as Farrukh's tangled hair.
No one but the dark mole of his tress
has ever truly received the grace of Farrukh's face.
Fortunate is that blackness which is always
the confidant and knee-to-knee companion of Farrukh.
The free cypress would tremble like a willow
if it beheld Farrukh's heart-stealing stature.
O Cupbearer, pour the purple wine
in memory of Farrukh's magic narcissus eyes.
My stature is bent double like a bow
grieving unceasingly as Farrukh's arched brow.
The fragrance of Farrukh's musk-scented tress
has put the breeze of Tatar musk to shame.
If every heart inclines toward some desire
mine is drawn only toward Farrukh.
I am a slave to the aspiration of one who
like Hafez is servant and dark mole for Farrukh.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 6/10. This poem is dedicated to someone named Farrukh. The repeated use of the name creates a rhythmic pattern. The verse about the cypress becoming 'like a trembling willow' if it sees Farrukh's stature is a beautiful image. The poem's structure as praise of a specific person is conventional. The focus on Farrukh's physical features (hair, mole, eyebrow) is accessible but may feel somewhat repetitive to Western readers unfamiliar with the person being praised.
