Poem #87
English Translation
Persian
Your beauty, in league with grace, has conquered the world
yes, with such alliance, the world is easily won.
The candle sought to expose the recluse's secret
thank God, its tongue caught fire with its own heart's mystery.
From this hidden fire within my breast
the sun itself is but a flame that caught in the sky.
The rose yearned to boast of the Friend's color and scent
in jealousy, the morning breeze stopped its breath.
I moved at ease on the rim like a compass
but Time, like a point, drew me into the center at last.
That day, longing for the wine-cup burned my harvest
fire caught from the reflection of the Cupbearer's cheek.
I will go dancing to the Magians' quarter, shaking my sleeves
free of these seditions that plague the end of time.
Drink wine! For he who sees the end of worldly work
rises light from grief and takes up the heavy goblet.
On the rose petal, in poppy's blood, it is written
'He who is ripened in love drinks the purple wine.'
Hafez, since the water of grace drips from your verse
how can the envious find a flaw to seize upon?
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains powerful imagery and philosophical statements. The opening verse 'with agreement, the world one can take' is a thought-provoking statement about unity. The verse about the sun being 'a flame' from the 'hidden fire' in the breast is a striking image. The observation that those who saw 'the end of the world's work' took up 'a heavy measure' is profound. The verse about the 'cooked' one taking 'wine like purple' suggests maturity through suffering. The poem's combination of vivid imagery and philosophical depth makes it very engaging.
