Poem #84
English Translation
Persian
O Cupbearer, bring wine, for the month of fasting has passed
fill the cup, for the season of reputation and name has passed!
Precious time has fled; come, let us redeem
the life that passed without the flask and cup.
Make me so drunk that in my selflessness I know not
who came or who went in the field of imagination.
Hoping a draught from your cup might reach us
our prayers rose morning and evening in the tavern.
The dead heart found life again
when the fragrance of the wine-breeze reached the soul.
The ascetic in his pride missed the path of safety
the rogue, through the path of need, found the Abode of Peace.
The heart's coin I possessed was spent on wine
it was a counterfeit coin, and so it went into the forbidden.
How long must we burn like aloes in the fire of repentance?
Give wine, for life has been wasted in raw fancies.
Preach no more to Hafez, for he has not found the path
a lost soul who has tasted the pure wine.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem celebrates the end of Ramadan (the month of fasting) and calls for wine. The verse about the ascetic having 'pride' while the libertine went to 'Dar al-Salam' (paradise) is a bold statement. The observation that the heart that was 'dead' came to life from the 'fragrance' of wine is a beautiful image. The verse about not being able to 'burn like aloes' in repentance is a witty statement. The poem's celebration of wine after fasting may require some cultural context, but the theme of seizing the moment is universal.
