Poem #69
English Translation
Persian
None exists who hasn't fallen for that double tress divine
in whose path does not a snare of calamity entwine?
Since your eyes steal hearts from recluses in their lair
being with you is no sin—we're justified to dare.
Your face must be divine grace's mirror bright
truly it is so—no pretense mars this sight.
The narcissus seeks your eye's beguiling way
poor flower! It knows naught, has no modesty to display.
For God's sake, don't comb your tress! Each night we face
a hundred quarrels with the Breeze in every place.
Return! Without your face, O heart-illuming flame
our gathering lacks all light and purity—such shame!
Caring for strangers shows good name and memory
O Soul! Does this rule not hold in your fair city?
Yesterday she passed; I cried: 'Keep our covenant true!'
She said: 'You err, master—in this pact, no loyalty's due.'
If the Magian master guides me, what's the harm
in every head resides a secret from God's charm.
What can the lover do but bear blame's heavy load
no hero shields against Fate's arrow on this road.
In ascetic's cell and Sufi's quiet retreat
no prayer-niche but your eyebrow's arch so sweet.
O harp steeped in Hafez's heart-blood red and deep
your music—springs it not from God and Quran's jealous keep?

The verse 'except the corner of your eyebrow, there is no prayer-niche' is a powerful fusion of romantic and religious imagery. The observation that 'in no head is there not a secret from God' is a profound statement about universal spirituality. The verse about the beloved saying 'in this covenant there is no fidelity' is a poignant acknowledgment of love's uncertainty. The final verse's reference to the Quran and God's jealousy adds spiritual depth. The poem's combination of romantic devotion and spiritual insight makes it very engaging.
