Poem #494

Poem #494

LoveNature

English Translation

Persian

O heart, if from the dimple's well you struggle to get free

Wherever else you go, you’ll find but sad regret and plea.

Beware! If you give ear to what the whispering Reason says

Like Adam, you’ll be driven forth from Eden’s garden ways.

Perhaps your fortune will not lead to where the waters flow

If from the Spring of Life itself you thirsty turn and go.

I give my soul in yearning for the sight of your dear face

When like the sun you rise at dawn to light the world with grace.

I breathe my spirit on you like the breeze of early morn

That you may blossom from the bud, a laughing rose new-born.

In separation's darkest night my soul is at my lip

'Tis time you rose up like the moon, and let the darkness slip.

I’ve shed two hundred streams of tears upon your path today

Hoping that like the cypress tree you’ll walk along this way.

Hafez, despair not! Think that moon-faced Joseph shall return

And from the Hut of Sorrows you shall go, and cease to mourn.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses longing and hope. The reference to Joseph adds cultural depth. The verse about 'in the dark night of separation of yours, my soul came to the lip, it is time that you come out like the shining moon' is a powerful statement. The observation that Hafez is told 'don't think, that that moon-faced Joseph returns and you come out from the hut of sorrows' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of longing and hope makes it very engaging.
