Poem #479
English Translation
Persian
'Tis morn! The clouds of Bahman shed their dew;
Bring morning wine, and let the cup renew.
صبح است و ژاله میچکد از ابر بهمنی
برگ صبوح ساز و بده جام یک منی
Drowned in the sea of Ego and of Pride,
bring wine to save me from this rising tide!
در بحر مایی و منی افتادهام، بیار می
تا خلاص بخشدم از مایی و منی
Drink the cup's blood! 'Tis lawful to the wise;
Serve the Beloved, wherein duty lies.
خونِ پیاله خور که حلال است خون او
در کار یار باش که کاریست کردنی
Saki, be ready! Grief lies in wait near;
Minstrel, play on the tune we love to hear.
ساقی به دست باش که غم در کمین ماست
مطرب نگاه دار همین ره که میزنی
The bent Harp whispered in my listening ear:
'Drink and be merry, while the path is clear!'
مِی ده که سر به گوش من آورد چنگ و گفت
«خوش بگذران و بشنو از این پیرِ منحنی»
Give wine to those who from the world are free
till 'He is Rich' rings out in harmony.
ساقی به بینیازی رندان که می بده
تا بشنوی ز صوت مغنی «هو الغنی»
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains Arabic phrases and expresses carpe diem philosophy. The Arabic phrase 'He is the Rich' adds cultural depth. The verse about 'being fallen in the sea of I and me' and asking to 'bring wine until I give release from I and me' is a powerful statement. The observation that the harp says 'pass pleasantly and hear from this curved elder' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of Arabic phrases and carpe diem philosophy makes it very engaging.
