Poem #478

LoveWine

English Translation

Persian

Drink deep the heavy cup, the brimming measure

and root out grief with wine's abundant pleasure.

Open your heart like the wide jar of wine;

Why seal it up like miser's clay design?

Drink till the Self dissolves in ecstasy;

Boast not of 'I'—let ego cease to be.

Be firm as stone upon the path of right;

Flee shifting waters and their colors bright.

Bind heart to wine! Be manly, bold, and free,

and break the neck of false hypocrisy.

Rise like Hafez! Strive with all your might;

Cast yourself before the Source of Light.

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses transformation and devotion. The verse about telling Hafez 'rise and make effort like Hafez until perhaps you throw yourself at the foot of the beloved' is a powerful statement. The observation that 'when you drink a ratl from the cup of without-self, you strike less, boast of self from yourself' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of transformation and devotion makes it very engaging.
