Poem #464
English Translation
Persian
Your beauty's work, like my love, perfect grew
be glad, for time shall not decay these two.
No mind can grasp, no fancy can design
a form more lovely, a spirit more divine.
Life's fruit is gathered if, by fate's decree
one day of union comes to comfort me.
With you, a year passes like a single day
without you, moments drag the years away.
I see your image when I sleep at night
for waking eyes are blind to such delight.
Have mercy, Love! Your sun has scorched me so
I've waned to nothing, like the moon completely low.
Hafez, complain not! If you seek the Friend
patience in absence must be without end.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses the relativity of time and devotion. The verse about 'that breath when I am with you, one year is a day, and that breath when I am without you, one moment is a year' is a powerful statement. The observation that Hafez is told 'don't complain if you want union of the friend, you must bear more than this on your probable separation' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of time relativity and devotion makes it very engaging.
