Poem #448

LoveWineWisdom

English Translation

Persian

O you who hold a station in the tavern's street

You are the Jamshid of your time, if a cup your hand does meet.

O you who spend night and day with the Beloved's tress and face

May opportunity be yours, for you have a blessed time and place.

O Zephyr! The burnt-hearted ones wait at the road's end

If you have a message from that traveled Friend.

Your fresh green mole is a pleasant seed of delight, but alas!

What a snare lies by its garden in sight.

I smell the scent of soul from the cup's laughing lip

Hear it, O Master, if you have a nose for the sip.

Since in fidelity you showed no stability or stay

I give thanks that in cruelty, you persist in your way.

What if a stranger seeks a good name from you?

Today, you are the one in this city with a name so true.

Your dawn prayer will be the soul's companion, I see

You who have a night-rising servant like Hafez, faithful and free.
