Poem #443
English Translation
Persian
If, like the cypress, you walk a moment in the garden fair
From jealousy of your face, every rose suffers a thorn's tear.
From the infidelity of your tress, every ring brings a storm
From the magic of your eye, sickness takes every corner and form.
Do not go to sleep like my fortune, O intoxicated eye of the Friend!
For the sigh of wakefulness pursues you, world without end.
I scatter the coin of my soul on the dust of your way
Though the coin of the soul holds no value in your day.
O heart, do not always boast of the tresses of the dear
When your judgment darkens, how will your path become clear?
My head was lost, yet this work never came to a head
My heart was seized, yet you felt no grief for the captive you led.
Like a point, I said, "Come into the circle's center, do!"
Laughing, she said, "O Hafez, what a compass are you!"
