Poem #439
English Translation
Persian
I saw a Moon rise in my sleep, a dream of pure delight,
Her face's calm reflection ended Separation's night.
The meaning was: 'The traveled Friend is coming home to you!'
O Cypress, enter through the door, and make the dream come true!
Blessings upon my Saki, who with omens bright and clear,
Came always with the cup and wine to bring me comfort here.
Happy the dream if you could see your homeland far away,
That memories of us might guide your steps back here to stay.
If Eternal Grace could be obtained by force or gold alone,
Then Alexander would have made the Water of Life his own.
Remember well those happy days when from my roof and door,
Came messages and notes of love, increasing more and more.
How did your rival find the chance to practice tyranny?
If only the Oppressed would seek the Judge's decree!
What do the raw ones know of Love, who haven't walked the way?
Seek courage! For in bravery, you carry off the day.
The one who taught your tender heart to be as hard as stone,
May his foot strike against a rock, and leave him there alone!
If any other wrote like Hafez, with such grace and art,
It would be pleasing to the King, who nurtures every heart.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses dream and hope. The verse about seeing 'a moon rose in sleep last night' and 'the night of separation ended from the reflection of its face' is a powerful statement. The reference to Alexander and the water of Khidr adds cultural depth. The observation that Hafez asks 'when did your rival find such opportunity of oppression' and says 'if the oppressed one came to the door of the judge one night' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of dream and hope makes it very engaging.
