Poem #430
English Translation
Persian
If with the dove and nightingale you will not drink the wine
When shall I cure you? 'For the last of cures is making wine.'
Store up the colors and the scents that spring scatters away
For winter's robbers follow fast—the months of Bahman and Dey.
When the rose unveils her face and the bird sings 'Hoo, Hoo!'
Put not the wine-cup from your hand—what is it that you do?
When did the pomp of kings and crowns stability bestow?
Only a tale of Jamshid's throne and Kai's crown we know.
Hoarding for heirs is infidelity, the wise ones say
By verdict of the flute and drum, the minstrel and his lay.
Time gives no gift it does not take again with cruel hand
Seek not for kindness from the base, for emptiness they planned.
Upon the gate of Paradise, this truth is written plain
'Woe to the one who buys the world's false charm and idle gain!'
Generosity is dead—I'll keep my words brief now
Bring wine! To Hatim's spirit and his soul we make our vow.
The miser smells not God's sweet scent. Come, Hafez, take the cup
Be generous! 'And I guarantee the debt I offer up.'
