Poem #43
English Translation
Persian
The garden court delights, and friends' companionship is sweet
may the Rose time bloom! For wine-drinkers' joy is complete.
From the Breeze each moment, our soul's scent grows sweet
yes, yes! The breath of lovers is a fragrance we greet.
The Rose, unopened, tunes its song of departure fair
lament, O Nightingale! The heart-struck lovers' anthems fill the air.
Good news for the sweet-singing bird who sings all night
the Friend delights in wakeful lovers' plaintive flight.
No joy exists within the world's vast marketplace
or if it does, the libertines and clever ones hold grace.
The Lily free whispered this wisdom in my ear
in this old monastery, the light-hearted hold what's dear.
Hafez! 'Abandon the world' is happiness's true way
lest you think the world-possessors' state is bright as day.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem celebrates spring and the joy of companionship. The repeated word 'khosh' (pleasant) creates a cheerful, celebratory mood. The theme of abandoning worldly concerns for true happiness is universal. The verse about the rose making 'the tune of departure' before opening is a poignant observation about beauty's transience. The final advice to abandon the world for happiness is a clear philosophical statement. The poem's positive tone and celebration of simple pleasures (garden, friends, wine) make it accessible and appealing.
