Poem #429

Poem #429

WineWisdom

English Translation

Persian

Come, Cupbearer! The tulip's cup is filled with wine today

How long will myths and idle tales lead our poor hearts astray?

Leave pride and vanity behind, for Time has seen the fall

Of Caesar's robe and Kay's great crown, ending their glory all.

Awake! The bird of the garden is drunk with morning's breath

Arise! For right behind you stalks the sleep of non-being and death.

Gracefully move, O tender branch of fresh and early spring

May winter's wind no harm to you or cruel disorder bring.

Trust not the wheel of heaven's love, nor how it turns around

Woe to the one who safe within its treacherous tricks is found!

Tomorrow, Kawthar's stream and houris wait for us, 'tis true

But today the moon-faced Saki and the wine-cup are here too.

The breeze recalls the covenant of childhood's happy day

O Soul, bring wine—the medicine that drives all grief away!

Regard not the rose's pomp and power, for the wind's decree

Has cast its petals underfoot for all the world to see.

Pour out a heavy measure to Hatim Tai's memory

That we may fold the misers' book of black iniquity.

Pour from that wine that gave the tulip beauty and its grace

And brought its inner nature out to shine upon its face.

Take your throne in the garden, where in service, rank on rank

The cypress stands, the reed is girt, upon the river bank.

Hafez, your magic-weaving tale has traveled far away

To Egypt, China, Rum, and to the borders of Ray.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses carpe diem philosophy and contains cultural references. The reference to Hatim of Tay adds cultural depth. The verse about 'tomorrow the wine of Kawthar and the houri is for us, and today also the moon-faced cupbearer and the cup of wine' is a powerful statement. The observation that Hafez's 'pleasant magic-deceiving tale reached until the limit of Egypt and China and to the sides of Rome and Ray' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of carpe diem philosophy and cultural references makes it very engaging.
