Poem #424

Love

English Translation

Persian

Do not depart from me, for you are light within my eyes

The comfort of my soul, the friend where my wild heart relies.

The lovers cannot take their hands from your enchanting hem

For you have torn the shirt of patience, worn by all of them.

May no harm come to you from your own fortune's jealous eye

For in the art of loveliness, you've reached the peak so high.

O Mufti of the age, forbid me not from Love's decree

I hold you excused, for you, alas, my Love did never see.

That reproach the Friend has cast on you, O Hafez, know it sweet

Perhaps beyond your simple mat you've stretched your weary feet?

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses plea and devotion. The verse about asking the beloved not to 'separate from me' because 'you are the light of my eye' and 'the rest of my soul and companion of my fleeing heart' is a powerful statement. The observation that Hafez tells the mufti 'I excuse you for you did not see it' when the mufti 'forbids from the love of it' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of plea and devotion makes it very engaging.
