Poem #390

Poem #390

English Translation

Persian

The crown of the Sultan Rose has appeared from the garden's edge

O Lord, may his arrival bless the Cypress and the Jasmine.

This royal sitting was worthy of his station

that every man might now sit in his own proper place.

Bear good tidings to the Ring of Jamshid concerning your signet's beauty

for the Greatest Name has cut short the demon's hand.

May this house be inhabited forever

for from its threshold dust, the wind of Yemen blows with the Merciful's breath.

The glory of Pashang's son and his world-conquering sword

have become the tale of every assembly in the Book of Kings.

The sky's wild steed has been tamed beneath your saddle

O Royal Knight, now that you have entered the field, strike the ball!

Your sword is the flowing water in the kingdom's stream

plant the tree of justice, and uproot the ill-wishers' weed.

It is no wonder now if, from your sweet nature's scent

the musk of Khotan rises from the desert of Izeh.

The recluses await your glorious display

tilt your hat's brim, and cast the veil from your face.

I consulted Reason, who said: 'Drink wine, Hafez!'

O Cupbearer, give wine, by the word of the trusted Counselor.

O Morning Breeze, present this to the Cupbearer of Atabak's feast

that he may grant me a sip from that gold-scattering cup.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 7/10. This is a panegyric poem to a king (Atabak). The poem contains praise and references to the king's court and justice. The verse about the 'tree of justice' and asking to 'plant it and remove the root of the ill-wishers' is a powerful statement. The reference to Jam's ring adds cultural depth. The poem's combination of praise and imagery makes it engaging, though panegyrics may be less universally appealing than love poetry.
