Poem #389

Poem #389

LoveNature

English Translation

Persian

Like the rose, at every breath of your scent

I tear my garment from collar to hem in ecstasy.

The rose saw your body, and as if drunk in the garden

it tore its robe upon its own breast.

It is hard to save my life from the grasp of your grief

yet you took my heart from me with such ease.

You turned from your friend at the whisper of enemies

but no one should be an enemy to a friend.

Your body in its dress is like wine in the glass

your heart in your chest is like iron hidden in silver.

Weep, O candle, tears of blood from your eyes

for the burning of your heart has become clear to all the world.

Do not act so that a liver-burning sigh rises from my chest

like smoke from a chimney.

Do not break my heart or cast it underfoot

for its dwelling place is in the coils of your hair.

Since the heart is bound in your tresses, Hafez

do not cast its fortune into the dust.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses plea and devotion. The verse about the rose seeing 'the body' and 'tearing the garment on the body like the intoxicated ones in the garden' is a powerful statement. The observation that Hafez asks the beloved not to 'break the heart and throw it in the foot' because it 'has dwelling in the head of your tress' is a profound statement. The poem's combination of plea and devotion makes it very engaging.
