Poem #388

Poem #388

Nature

English Translation

Persian

Spring and the Rose have come to break our vows and stir our joy

uproot the weed of sorrow in the garden of the Rose's face.

The morning breeze arrived in friendship

the bud, beside itself with joy, tore the shirt upon its breast.

Learn the way of truth from the clear water

seek the freedom of the spirit from the garden cypress.

See how the breeze has ravished the Rose's dust

behold the Hyacinth's curl tangled in the Jasmine's face.

The bride of the bud has come from the harem to a lucky star

stealing heart and faith with her enchanting beauty.

The warbling nightingale and the thousand-voiced bird

have come forth from the house of grief to meet the Rose.

Tell the tale of fair ones and the flowing cup

according to Hafez's word and the verdict of the wise old Master.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses the joy of spring and renewal. The verse about the bud 'going out from itself and tearing the shirt on itself' when 'the wind of the morning breeze arrived in support' is a powerful statement. The observation that 'the bride of the bud reached from the sanctuary to auspicious fortune' and 'takes heart and religion exactly to the face of beauty' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of spring imagery and joy makes it very engaging.
