Poem #377

Poem #377

English Translation

Persian

One night we'll raise our hands to heaven, and offer up a prayer

to find a cure for this deep grief of parting and despair.

My heart is sick and fainting, friends! Bring help, I implore

call the Physician to my side, my spirit to restore.

That One who fled in anger, though I gave no cause for strife

bring Her again, for God's sake, to give me back my life.

The root of joy is withered dry; where is the Tavern way?

That in its air and water, we may bloom again one day.

Seek help, O heart, from Rindy souls, who know the secret art

lest in the difficulty of life, you play a losing part.

No shelter gives the common bird, no shadow for our pain

we seek the royal Huma's wing, auspicious to our gain.

My heart has fled the veil of flesh; where is the Singer sweet?

That to Hafez's ghazal now, the music we may beat.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses seeking help and remedy. The verse about asking 'where is the path of the wine-houses' when 'the root of joy became dry' so they can 'do growth and appearance in that water and air' is a powerful statement. The reference to the Huma adds cultural depth. The poem's combination of seeking help and emotional expression makes it very engaging.
