Poem #360
English Translation
Persian
If I go from this ruined house to the home of light
I’ll go as a wise and learned man, seeing right.
If I return safely to my homeland from this quest
I vow to go straight to the tavern as a guest.
To tell what truths I found upon this mystic way
I’ll go to the monastery door with harp and cup to play.
If the friends of the Path should drink my blood in pain
I am base if I go to strangers to complain.
From now on, my hand holds the Beloved's chain-like hair
how long shall I chase my mad heart's desire and despair?
If I see her eyebrow's arch, that prayer-niche true
I'll bow in thanks and offer praise where it is due.
Happy the moment when, like Hafez, under the Vizier's sway
drunk from the tavern, with the Friend, I make my way.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses journey and devotion. The verse about vowing to go 'to the wine-house from the path' if returning 'to the homeland safely from this travel' is a powerful statement. The observation that Hafez will go 'to the door of the monastery with the harp and the cup' to say 'what discovery became from this journey and wayfaring' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of journey and devotion makes it very engaging.
