Poem #339

LoveNature

English Translation

Persian

When your visage wanders through my eye's own rose garden fair

my heart runs to the window frame to catch your glimmer there.

No outlook suits the resting place your beauty should command

it's only me, this world, and this eye-corner where I stand.

Come, that I may fling out rubies, pearls at your first tread

pulled from heart's own treasury to my eye's bright window spread.

At dawn my streaming tears conspired to bring me low

had not my liver's blood clasped tight my eye's hem so.

The very day I saw your face my heart confessed in dread

'Should harm befall, my blood be on the eye's own head.'

All night until the dawn, upon the wind's swift path

I set my eye-lamp shining, drawn by news of union's bath.

For pity on this aching heart of Hafez, stay

the people-slaying arrow of your eye away.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains beautiful imagery of the eye and heart. The verse about the heart coming 'in pursuit of glance to the window of the eye' when 'the image of your face passes to the rose-garden of the eye' is a striking image. The observation that Hafez pulls 'ruby and pearl from the treasure-house of the heart to the window of the eye' in scattering for 'the arrival' is a powerful statement. The poem's combination of imagery and emotional expression makes it very engaging.
