Poem #314
English Translation
Persian
Last night your eyes' sweet sickness swept me quite away
yet from your lips' sweet grace I held my soul at bay.
My love for your dark down is not of recent date
long have I drunk from your crescent lip's intoxicate.
I'm pleased that through all cruelty, I stood my ground
in your lane, seeking you, I never sat down.
Seek not tranquility from me who haunt the tavern door
I've served the libertines with every breath, and evermore.
On love's path, beyond the veil, a hundred perils wait
lest you say: 'When life ran out, I escaped my fate.'
What care I for envy's arrows, crooked though they be
when I'm joined to my Beloved's eyebrow's archery?
A kiss on your carnelian lips is mine by right
through pain and cruelty, my seal of faith stayed bright.
An idol's army plundered all my heart and fled
alas, if the King's mercy does not take my hand instead!
Hafez's wisdom reached the sky, then fell so low
your tall cypress bent my back with grief and woe.
