Poem #282
English Translation
Persian
My rest, my patience, and my wits have all been stolen away
By that stone-hearted idol with the ear of silver-gray.
A playful beauty, agile, bold, with cap set all askew
A moon-faced Turk in robes of silk, delicate to view.
From the fierce heat of passion's fire that burns within my breast
Like a boiling cauldron, I can find no moment's rest.
My heart would find its peace at last, if like a shirt I might
Embrace her form and hold her close within the silent night.
And though my bones may turn to dust and crumble in the grave
Your love will never leave the soul your beauty did enslave.
My heart and faith, my heart and faith, are swept away and gone
By her shoulder, oh her shoulder, that I gaze upon.
Your cure, Hafez, your only cure, lies in one thing alone
Her sweet lip, oh her sweet lip, the sweetest ever known.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses intense devotion. The verse about the beloved taking 'heart and religion' and repeating 'on the shoulder' creates a powerful sense of devotion. The observation that even if the bone becomes 'rotten,' the love 'will not become forgotten from my soul' is a profound statement. The poem's combination of devotion and emotional expression makes it very engaging.
