Poem #280
English Translation
Persian
When the morning breeze disheveled her amber-scattering tress
every broken soul that joined it became fresh.
Where is a companion
that I may explain what the heart endures from the days of separation?
Time copied the likeness of your face from the rose's page
but hid it in the bud for shame before you.
You are asleep, and no shore has appeared for love
God be praised for this path that has no end!
Perhaps the beauty of the Kaaba seeks excuse from the travelers
for the souls of the alive-hearted burned in its desert.
Who brings news of the heart's Joseph from the well of her chin
to this broken one in the House of Sorrow?
I will take the end of that tress and give it to the Master's hand
for lovelorn Hafez has burned from her trickery.
