Poem #277
English Translation
Persian
The nightingale's whole thought is that the rose has become his friend
the rose is thinking how to show coquetry in her dealings.
Charm is not merely killing the lover
the true Master is one who cares for his servant's grief.
It is fitting that blood should wave in the ruby's heart
from the injustice that common clay breaks its market.
The nightingale learned song from the rose's grace
otherwise, there would not be such speech and ghazals in his beak.
O you who pass through our Beloved's alley, be on guard
for her wall breaks heads.
That traveler who carries a hundred caravans of hearts
wherever he may be, O God, keep him safe.
Although talk of safety sounds pleasant, O heart
the side of love is precious—do not abandon it.
The Sufi who cocked his hat in joy
with two more cups, his turban will be in disarray.
Hafez's heart, which had grown accustomed to your meeting
is pampered by union—do not seek to harm it.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains profound statements about love and service. The verse about 'heart-taking' not being 'that they kill the lover' but 'that the master may be the grief of the servant' is a powerful statement. The observation that 'the nightingale learned word from the grace of the rose' and otherwise 'this all saying and ghazal would not be arranged in its beak' is a profound statement. The poem's combination of wisdom and emotional expression makes it very engaging.
