Poem #250

Poem #250

Love

English Translation

Persian

Show me your face, and take my self away

let wind consume the harvest of my day.

Since we gave heart and eye to floods of pain

come, flood of grief, and level this domain.

Who smells her amber tress? Alas, not I!

O foolish heart, let such vain longings die.

Tell my chest: 'Quench the Persian fire's glow!'

Tell my eyes: 'Let the Tigris cease to flow!'

Long live the Magian Elder's grace and state!

Let others go, forget my name and fate.

Without great effort, none can reach the goal

seek wages only when you give your soul.

Promise a meeting on my dying day

then to the grave, free me from this clay.

She said last night: 'My lashes kill the weak.'

O Lord, remove the cruel words she'd speak.

Hafez, consider how her heart is frail

leave her threshold, cease your weeping wail.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses intense emotion and requests. The verse about the beloved saying 'with the long eyelashes of yours, I will kill' and asking God to 'take the thought of injustice from her memory' is a striking statement. The reference to 'the fire-temple of Fars' and 'the Tigris of Baghdad' adds cultural depth. The observation that Hafez should 'take thought from the delicacy of the friend's heart' and 'take this lamentation and cry from her threshold' is a profound statement. The poem's combination of intensity and emotional expression makes it very engaging.
