Poem #247
English Translation
Persian
O Breeze, pass not the Beloved's house in vain
nor keep the news from this heart filled with pain.
O Rose, in thanks for blooming as you please
deny us not the dawn-bird's gentle breeze.
I loved you when you were the crescent moon
now you are full, grant me a vision soon.
The world and all within is brief and small
deny not this to those who know it all.
Now that your ruby lip is sugar's spring
speak, and to parrots sweet provisions bring.
The poet spreads your virtues far and wide
deny him not the wage for which he sighed.
If you seek fame for goodness, hear this told
for words of praise, withhold not silver, gold.
Grief's dust will fade, and joy will come to stay
Hafez, weep not, but wash the dust away.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem contains requests and advice. The repeated structure of 'don't withhold' creates a sense of urgency. The verse about being 'the companion of your love' when the beloved 'was the new moon' and now asking not to withhold 'view' when 'you are the full moon' is a beautiful image. The poem's combination of requests and emotional expression makes it engaging.
