Poem #232

Poem #232

Wisdom

English Translation

Persian

I'm determined that if it's within my power and hand

I'll undertake such work that grief will end across the land.

The heart's sacred privacy admits no opposites' debate

when the demon leaves, the angel enters through the gate.

Rulers' company is dark as Yalda's longest night

seek light from the sun, so true illumination might.

How long sit at doors of heartless worldly masters there

waiting for the master who may never come to care?

Don't abandon begging, for you'll find treasure untold

from the glance of one who passes by with vision bold.

Both righteous and unrighteous displayed their wares to sell

to see whose goods find favor and whose prospects may excel.

Wish your lover nightingale long life, for finally one day

the garden will turn green and rose branches will bloom in May.

Hafez's unawareness in this hall is no surprise

all who enter the wine-house emerge oblivious to the skies.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains profound advice. The verse about 'the demon, when outside, goes, the angel, may enter' is a powerful statement. The reference to 'the night of Yalda' (a Persian winter solstice celebration) adds cultural depth. The observation that 'everyone who to the wine-house, went, without news, comes' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of practical advice and mystical insight makes it very engaging.
