Poem #227

Poem #227

WineWisdom

English Translation

Persian

Though the city's preacher finds these words too hard to bear

one who practices hypocrisy will never Muslim be, I swear.

Learn the libertine's art and practice generosity with care

a beast that doesn't drink wine will never become human, I declare.

Only a pure gem can receive grace's sacred touch and light

not every stone and clay becomes a pearl or coral bright.

The Greatest Name will do its work, O heart, be glad and free

for through deceit and trickery, no demon Muslim comes to be.

I practice love and hope this noble art won't lead astray

unlike other arts that often cause deprivation's way.

Last night she promised tomorrow she'd grant my heart's desire

O God, arrange it so she won't regret or will retire!

I pray to God for beauty in your character and grace

so my heart won't scatter once again from your embrace.

The particle, Hafez, without high aspiration in its soul

will never seek the shining sun's resplendent, radiant goal.
