Poem #21

LoveNature

English Translation

Persian

My heart and faith are lost! The Friend rose to complain

'Sit not with us! For safety has fled your domain.'

Who in this circle sat, with joy and heart at rest?

Who did not rise at last, with grief within his breast?

If the Candle boasted of that laughing lip's delight

it paid the price in burning tears throughout the night.

The breeze of Spring arose, in garden and in glade

to serve your cypress form, and cheek of rose-red shade.

You passed by drunk; the angels, watching from the skies

saw Doomsday's tumult from your lovely face arise.

The Cypress, proud and tall, could not its foot advance

ashamed to match its height against your stately dance.

Hafez, cast off this cloak! Or life will be the cost

for fire burns the robe of those in falsehood lost.
