Poem #21
English Translation
Persian
My heart and faith are lost! The Friend rose to complain
'Sit not with us! For safety has fled your domain.'
Who in this circle sat, with joy and heart at rest?
Who did not rise at last, with grief within his breast?
If the Candle boasted of that laughing lip's delight
it paid the price in burning tears throughout the night.
The breeze of Spring arose, in garden and in glade
to serve your cypress form, and cheek of rose-red shade.
You passed by drunk; the angels, watching from the skies
saw Doomsday's tumult from your lovely face arise.
The Cypress, proud and tall, could not its foot advance
ashamed to match its height against your stately dance.
Hafez, cast off this cloak! Or life will be the cost
for fire burns the robe of those in falsehood lost.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem explores the theme of being rejected by the beloved and the universal experience of regret in love. The image of the candle boasting about the beloved's lip is playful. The verse about the spring breeze supporting the beloved's beauty creates a vivid natural scene. The reference to 'resurrection' (qiyamat) for the beloved's effect is a strong metaphor. The final warning about the cloak of hypocrisy catching fire is a memorable image. The poem's theme of love's dangers and the need to cast off false piety is accessible.
