Poem #180
English Translation
Persian
Your pistachio mouth laughs at the tale of sugar sweet
For God's sake, laugh one sugar, make my joy complete.
The Tuba tree cannot compare with your stature's grace
I pass this tale, lest words grow long and lose their place.
If you would not have rivers of blood flow from your eyes
Bind not your heart to others' talk, where danger lies.
Whether you show your face or strike with scornful pride
We follow not the self-pleased Sheikh, but turn aside.
When will he know the turmoil of my state, the pain
He whose heart never was a captive in this chain.
The market of desire is hot; where is that Cypress fair
That I may burn my soul like incense on her air.
Where our Friend speaks with sugar-laughter, soft and true
O pistachio, for God's sake, who on earth are you?
Hafez, since you won't dance to the Turk's coquettish hand
Do you know your place? 'Tis Khwarazm or Khujand.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses longing and frustration. The reference to Tuba (a tree in paradise) adds Islamic cultural depth. The verse about the heart not being bound 'in the fidelity of the conversation of the river of others' is a striking statement. The observation that Hafez doesn't know his place because he doesn't do 'the turning of the coquetry of the Turks' is a poignant statement. The poem's combination of emotional expression and cultural references makes it engaging.
