Poem #178
English Translation
Persian
Who found the heart's true secret in the Friend's domain
Remained; who knew it not, in denial did remain.
Blame not my heart if it has left the veil behind
Thank God it stayed not in the curtain of the mind.
The Sufis freed their goods from wine's deep pledge and stain
Our cloak alone within the tavern did remain.
The censor turned a Sheikh, his sins forgot in vain
But our tale in the market's gossip did remain.
Each ruby cup we took from that hand, crystal-plain
Turned to regret's salt water, and in eyes did remain.
Save for my heart, which loved from start to end of pain
We heard of none who in this labor did remain.
The narcissus fell sick, your eyes to attain
It failed to learn your ways, and sickly did remain.
I found no sound more pleasant than love's sweet refrain
A memory that in this turning dome shall remain.
My cloak concealed a hundred faults, a hidden stain
It went for wine; the belt of unbelief did remain.
Your beauty left the painter of China in such strain
That on the doors and walls, his wonder did remain.
Hafez's heart went to view her tress, to break the chain
Hoping to leave, but captive there it did remain.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains profound statements about love and devotion. The repeated structure of 'remained' creates a powerful sense of permanence. The verse about the heart going 'from eternity until eternity' as a lover and never being 'in work' is a profound statement. The observation that 'the voice of the word of love' is the most pleasant 'memento' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of philosophical depth and structural repetition makes it very engaging.
