Poem #174

Love

English Translation

Persian

Good news, O heart! The morning breeze has come again

The hoopoe brings glad tidings from Sheba's far domain.

Sing out, O bird of dawn, with David's holy song

For Rose's Solomon returns, where he belongs.

Where is the mystic who can speak the lily's tongue

To ask why it departed and why back it sprung.

God's grace and kindness showed humanity to me

That moon-faced idol came back with fidelity.

The tulip caught the scent of wine upon the dawn

Brand-hearted, seeking cure, it came back from where 'twas gone.

My eye remained upon the path this caravan would take

Until the cry of "Come!" caused my poor heart to wake.

Though Hafez broke the vow and caused her grief and pain

See how her grace returned to our door once again.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses joy at the beloved's return. The reference to Solomon and the hoopoe from Sheba adds biblical and cultural depth. The verse about the tulip hearing 'the fragrance of sweet wine' and returning 'in hope of cure' is a beautiful image. The observation that the beloved returned 'with grace' even though Hafez 'broke covenant' is a profound statement about forgiveness. The poem's combination of celebration and cultural references makes it very engaging.
