Poem #173

LoveWisdom

English Translation

Persian

In prayer, the memory of your eyebrow's arch appeared

A state so deep, the prayer-niche cried out what it feared.

Expect no patience, heart, or sense from me today

For all that endurance has been scattered to the wind and gray.

The wine is pure, the garden birds are drunk with glee

The season of love and work is built on ecstasy.

I scent the fragrance of improvement in the air

The rose brought joy, the breeze came happy, free from care.

O bride of art, complain not of your fortune's doom

Adorn the chamber of beauty, for here comes the groom.

The garden's beauties all adorned themselves with pride

But our Beloved with God-given grace does abide.

The trees are bowed beneath the weight of what they hold

O happy cypress, free from grief, and standing bold.

Musician, sing a ghazal from Hafez's store

That I may say the covenant of joy is here once more.

Cultural Context

US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses joy and celebration. The opening verse about the beloved's eyebrow coming to memory in prayer and the prayer-niche crying is a powerful fusion of religious and romantic imagery. The observation that 'the season of love' came 'to foundation' is a striking statement. The verse about the cypress being 'free' from 'the burden of grief' is a beautiful image. The poem's combination of celebration and imagery makes it engaging.
