Poem #166
English Translation
Persian
The day of parting and the night alone have passed
I cast this omen—the star and task are done at last.
All autumn's pomp and pride in grandeur's sway
at last succumbed to spring's breeze gentle play.
Thanks be to God! With rose's fortune on the rise
the winter wind's pride and the thorn's glory dies.
O morning of hope, veiled in the unseen's shrine
emerge! The dark night's work has reached its line.
Long nights' confusion and the heart's despair
all ended in the Beloved's tresses' care.
I can't believe, knowing how fate breaks its vow
grief's tale has ended in the Friend's fortune now.
O Saki, you showed grace—may wine your cup fill
your wisdom cured the hangover's ill.
Though none counted Hafez worthy to be known
thanks that boundless hardship now has flown.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses relief that hardship has ended. The repeated structure of 'ended' creates a powerful sense of closure. The verse about 'all that coquetry and luxury that autumn was commanding' ending 'in the step of the spring breeze' is a beautiful image. The observation that the 'tale of grief' ended 'in the fortune of the friend' is a poignant statement. The poem's combination of relief and gratitude makes it engaging.
