Poem #162
English Translation
Persian
The rose has come! What could be sweeter still?
Than holding nothing but the wine cup's thrill.
Seize joy's moment, find the pearl while it gleams
the gem won't always rest in the shell's dreams.
Count it fortune, drink wine in the garden's glow
the rose won't last until next week, you know.
O you who fill the golden cup with ruby wine
bestow it on one who has no gold to shine.
Come, Sheikh, and from our cellar drink wine rare
such vintage won't be found in Heaven's Kawthar there.
Wash the pages if you're my fellow student here
Love's knowledge won't be found in books so clear.
Learn from me, bind your heart to one whose face
needs no ornament to hold beauty's grace.
O God, grant me wine without hangover's pain
with it, no headache's burden shall remain.
I'm soul-servant to that Sultan, though it's true
He may not remember me, His servant through and through.
Adorn the world's crown, for the sun won't grace
a crown as beautifully in any other place.
Who finds fault in Hafez's verse must be one
who has no grace in their essence, none.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem contains profound advice about seizing the moment. The verse about the rose not being there 'until next week' is a powerful reminder of transience. The observation that 'the knowledge of love' is not 'in the book' is a profound statement. The reference to Kawthar (a river in paradise) adds Islamic cultural depth. The verse about asking for 'wine without hangover' is a beautiful prayer. The poem's combination of carpe diem philosophy and mystical insight makes it very engaging.
