Poem #160
English Translation
Persian
Solitude is sweet if the Friend will be my Friend
not that I burn while She's the candle for others to tend.
I'd never sell Solomon's seal for any price
for sometimes demon's hand holds that device.
O God, don't let it be that in Union's sanctuary
the rival's intimate, while I'm left solitary.
O Huma, don't cast honor's shadow on the land
where parrots rank below the crow's command.
Why express longing? The heart's fire can be known
from the burning that in every word is shown.
Your quarter's air won't leave my head, it's true
the stranger's wandering heart stays with homeland's view.
If Hafez gains ten tongues like the lily's array
like the bud, his lips stay sealed before You each day.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses longing and devotion. The opening verse about solitude being pleasant if 'the friend' is there is a beautiful statement. The reference to Solomon's seal adds biblical depth. The verse about the Huma bird (a mythical bird of good fortune) adds cultural richness. The observation that 'the burning of the fire of the heart' can be recognized 'from the burning that in the word' is a profound statement. The poem's combination of emotional expression and cultural references makes it engaging.
