Poem #147
English Translation
Persian
The morning breeze brought news to me last night
that the day of grief and pain is taking flight.
Let's give a torn robe to the morning musicians' band
for the good news the dawn breeze brought to the land.
Come, for Ridwan brought the houri of Paradise
to this world for the sake of a heart so wise.
We go to Shiraz with Fortune's favor and grace
what a friend my Fortune brought to this place!
Strive to mend our minds, for this felt hat of ours
has broken many a royal crown and towers.
What cries reached the moon from my heart's fire
when memory brought that tent-dwelling moon's desire.
May Mansur's banner reach the heavens high
Hafez, who refuge in the King's court did try.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses hope and celebration. The reference to Ridwan (the keeper of paradise) and the houri adds Islamic cultural depth. The verse about going to Shiraz with 'the favor of fortune' is a personal touch. The observation that 'many breaks' came 'with the royal crown' is a poignant statement about the cost of power. The reference to Mansur (a famous Sufi martyr) adds historical depth. The poem's combination of personal expression and cultural references makes it engaging.
