Poem #145
English Translation
Persian
What intoxication is this that faces us now?
Who was the Saki, and whence came this wine, and how?
Take wine in hand and seek the open plain
for the singing bird brings a sweet refrain.
O heart, complain not like the bud of work tight-bound
for the morning breeze brings a knot-opening sound.
May the rose and narcissus arrive in good cheer
the violet came happy, the jasmine brought purity clear.
The breeze is Solomon's hoopoe in news so sweet
bringing joy from Sheba's garden to our feet.
The cure for our heart's weakness is the Saki's glance
raise your head, the Doctor brings the potion's trance.
I am the Magian Elder's disciple, Sheikh, do not scold
for you made the promise, but he fulfilled it, behold.
I praise the narrow eyes of that warrior Turk
who attacked me, a dervish, with such deadly work.
Now Heaven serves Hafez with a willing grace
for he brought refuge to your Fortune's place.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses joy and celebration. The reference to Solomon's hoopoe bringing news from the rose-garden of Sheba adds biblical and cultural depth. The verse about the morning breeze bringing 'the knot-opening breeze' is a beautiful image of hope. The observation that 'the coquetry of the cupbearer' is 'the remedy of the weakness of our heart' is a striking statement. The poem's combination of natural imagery and celebration makes it engaging.
