Poem #141
English Translation
Persian
Did you see, O heart, what Love's grief did anew?
When the Beloved left, what to the faithful friend She did do?
Alas for that magic narcissus, what games it played!
Alas for that drunkard, what havoc with the wise She made!
My tears turned dawn-red from the Friend's cold disdain
see what cruel Fortune did in this work of pain.
A flash from Layla's house at dawn did start
alas, what it did to Majnun's broken heart!
O Cupbearer, give wine! For none can tell or see
what the Writer of the Unseen wrote in secrecy.
He who drew this circle with designs so vast
none knew what the compass did as it spun and passed.
Love's thought struck fire in Hafez's heart and burned
see what the Old Friend did, and what the friend earned.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 8/10. This poem expresses the pain of love and separation. The reference to Layla and Majnun (a famous Persian love story) adds cultural depth. The verse about the 'writer of the unseen' and what was done 'in the curtain of secrets' is a profound statement about divine mystery. The observation that 'the thought of love' burned 'the old friend' is a powerful image. The poem's combination of cultural references and emotional intensity makes it very engaging.
