Poem #108
English Translation
Persian
O King, may heaven's ball be in your play, Guided by your mallet on its way.
May the arena of all time and space, Be the field where you run your royal race.
Victory's lady loves your banner's flight, Entangled in its folds with pure delight.
May Conquest's eye gaze fondly on your steed, And bless your every motion and your deed.
O you whose style Mercury would write, Defining majesty with words of light.
May Universal Reason serve your court, And sign the decrees of your royal fort.
The Tuba tree is jealous of your height, Your cypress form, a vision of delight.
May your garden court, so fresh and fair, With highest paradise firmly compare.
Not only beasts and plants and stones obey, But all creation bows beneath your sway.
Whatever exists in the world of command, May it submit to your imperial hand.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem appears to be addressed to a king or ruler. The verse about 'the ball of the heavens' being 'in the curve of your polo-stick' is a striking image of power. The reference to Tuba (a tree in paradise) and the highest paradise adds spiritual dimension. The observation that everything in 'the world of command' should be 'to your command' is a statement of absolute authority. The poem's combination of political praise and spiritual imagery makes it engaging.
