Poem #102
English Translation
Persian
Last night the wind brought news of one who roams, My heart, like wind, no longer finds a home.
I cast my spirit to the breeze's play, Come what may, let fate have its way.
My state is this: in solitude I find, Companions in the forces of the mind.
Each eve the lightning flashes as my friend, Each dawn the wind's soft whispers never end.
Caught in the curvature of your dark hair, My heart forgot the home it once held dear.
No thought of safety, no desire to flee, Bound in that coil, content and wild and free.
Today I learned what wisdom friends impart, Their counsel echoes in my grateful heart.
O Lord, bless those who guided me aright, And fill their souls with Your eternal light.
My heart turned blood whene'er the morning breeze, Unveiled the rosebud's hidden mysteries.
In every opening flower, your face I see, And memory brings a sweet agony.
My frail existence had begun to fade, Slipping away into the evening shade.
But dawn's soft wind, with scent of union blew, And gave me life, and made my soul anew.
Hafez, your nature, pure and free from art, Has won the wish that slumbered in your heart.
May souls be sacrificed for those so true, Who offer love in everything they do.
Cultural Context
US Interest Rank: 7/10. This poem expresses longing for the traveled friend. The verse about making 'the shining lightning' and 'the wind' as companions is a poignant image of loneliness. The observation that the heart never said 'the familiar dwelling, may it be remembered' shows complete devotion to the beloved. The verse about the heart becoming 'blood' when the rose-bud opens is a beautiful image. The poem's combination of natural imagery and emotional expression makes it engaging.
